It is hard to imagine an easier route for a small crew looking for a relaxing week away.

The first afternoon involves a gentle cruise through the Shropshire countryside, passing under a few lift bridges. Your first night is spent at Bridge 43 (Platt Lane).

There is pub just down the lane. The Waggoners Inn (01948 880259)

Just past your mooring is a shop The Barn, which sells cakes and quiches as well as few groceries etc. It is open May - September (except Saturdays). The canal winds its peaceful way past Fenn's, Whixall & Bettisfield Mosses Nature Reserve, which is owned by English Nature. Lunch stop is Ellesmere, where you can also find a good range of shops. Moor up on the main canal rather than venture down the town's short arm. In the afternoon you continue past Frankton Junction (Montgomery Canal) to Hindford (bridge 10). The pub here does excellent food and is well worth a visit! The Jack Mytton (01691 679861)

Today brings a new experience….Locks! The good news is that there are only two and there are always boats travelling in each direction so you can be sure of some help and advice if you are still a little uncertain. Chirk is the recommended lunch stop, with its castle, aqueduct and tunnel. (What a day!) From here it is a short journey to the undoubted highlight of the week. The Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, completed in the year of the battle of Trafalgar, is one Thomas Telford's outstanding achievements and is one of the engineering wonders of the world. This aqueduct is 1000 feet long and over 126 feet above the river Dee. We suggest that as soon as you have crossed over, you moor up for the night at Trevor. A very simple day today that gives you a chance to visit and explore Llangollen itself and perhaps take a trip on the Steam Railway.(01978 860979) Mooring can be at a premium at the very end of the canal, so you can either potter up in the morning to find a mooring vacated by one of the boats heading home, or you can always catch a bus up. There is a wide range of pubs, restaurants and shops as well a host tourist attractions.

Time to head back towards Whitchurch. This first leg takes you back across Pontcysyllte and Chirk Aqueducts to Chirk where you could take some time to look round. Tonight's destination is Hindford, but you could vary this by pressing on to Bridge 5. The Narrowboat Inn (0101691 66105). & The Poachers Pocket (01691 773250)

A choice of activity today, as you can take a detour to explore the first few miles of the Montgomery Canal (under restoration). This starts at Frankton Junction where it sets off on its journey to Newtown in mid-Wales, but because of water supply issues, you do have to plan this carefully. There are three manned locks at the start and they are only open: Monday - Friday 0930 hrs - 1030 hrs & 1430 hrs - 1530 hrs, Saturdays 1000 hrs - 1200 hrs, Sundays 1400 hrs - 1600 hrs. (British waterways 01691 622549). This means that mid-week, you can cruise down to the end in the morning, turn and return up to rejoin the Llangollen canal in the early afternoon. Queens Head (01691 610255). You now head for nearby Ellesmere to spend the night in this delightful little town (moor along the main canal). Black Lion (01691 622418)

Today is the last full day and many choose to cruise past the hire base and on down to Grindley Brook, where there is a flight of locks. Turn just before the locks and head back to the boatyard. You also have the opportunity to venture down the Whitchurch arm. There is a turning point in the arm! Finally you end up back where it all started and for your last evening you can stroll into Whitchurch town and sample any one of a dozen fine pubs and restaurants. The Horse and Jockey (01948 662723)

(Whitchurch)

Finish

Whatever you decide to do on the last night, you do need this morning, to please be back at the boatyard by 9.00 am and to vacate the boat by 9.30 am.

Notes

A variation on this cruise is to set out back from Llangollen a day earlier and to take the opportunity to go down through the Grindley Brook flight of locks and cruise perhaps as far as Wrenbury. Dusty Miller (01270 780537) and The Cotton Arms (01270 780377). You must however, remember to leave plenty of time to come back up the flight of locks on the last full day, as there is normally a long queue and a quite substantial wait.
